hearts and flowers shawl

I looove things with heart motifs. So, naturally, I couldn’t pass this hearts and flowers shawl pattern featured in Simply Knitting:

I finally made it! The pattern starts from the bottom edge, which means that you’ll start off with sl1k4 1155 times!! This was pretty daunting. Besides, I don’t wear a shawl much. So, it took me a while to get into the mood of knitting this.

Once started, though, the shawl decreased quickly, and perhaps about the time when the first heart motif was done, the project became manageable and smoothly knit up. After I finished the first panel, it was too much fun for me to put down.

I tied the front very loosely, but I think it’s time for me to find a nice shawl pin:)

I have to say knitting lace shawls is pretty fun. Only if I have occasions to wear shawls….

Simply knittingというイギリスの編み物雑誌に載っていたパターンです。ハートのモチーフ大好きの私なので、これは編 むしかないでしょう、の勢いで雑誌を買ってみたのはいいものの、レースのショールなんて滅多に身につけないし、なにしろこのショール、ボトムの淵から編ん でいくわけなので、編みはじめが、sl1, k4を1155回繰り返すというとんでもない始まり方で、波に乗るまでになかなか時間がかかってしまいました。

ちなみに、案の定、編みはじめの数を間違えていたらしく、１段目のパネルと２段目のパネルが見事にずれてます（涙）

そんなこんなでしたが、編んでいくに従って、どんどん減らし目していくので、すぐになんとかなる目数になるし、ハートとお花のパターンも編むのが楽しくて、波に乗ってしまったあとはとっても楽しく編めました。

ちなみに、糸はコットンのレース糸なんだけど、コットンでもブロッキングすると全然仕上がりが変わるんですねぇ。モチーフもくっきりするし、ショー ル自体の形もしっかり出てくれて、編みあがった時は全然ショールっぽくなかったんだけど、ブロッキング後はしっかりとショールっぽくなってくれました。

前は軽く結んでみました。が、おしゃれなショールピンが欲しいかも。

レースはほんと楽しいですね〜。ショールなんて身につける機会滅多にないけど、また別のレースのショールを編んでみたくなりました。まだ糸が少し余っているので、小さめのショールでも作ろうかと思っています。

Leyburn Socks

While i was knitting away the hearts and flowers shawl, i found out that the deadline for these socks was extended. So, i finished the second sock quickly:

these are Leyburn socks. i knitted these for the spring KAL organized by the vegan socks group on Ravelry. By the time i finished the first sock, I got really busy and i couldn’t really go on to the second sock. i was also behind catching up with reading blogs and forums. so, i gave up making it for the deadline. i thought i would complete them when i had time.

but i made it!

i’m so happy that i found this pattern. i purchased this yarn not knowing what i could do with it. i was so curious to see how these loud combinations of colours would knit up. i could’ve knitted plain stockinette socks, but i wanted to do something more. looking through the project pages of this pattern on Ravelry, i found a few socks that used varigated yarns and i liked them a lot. so, i gave this yarn a go.

i think it ended up alright. the lattice stitches can be seen clearly. actually, they broke down the crowds of loud colours and made them prettier, i think.

i changed the heels simply because i like the heels with heel flaps better. also, i used the needles one size smaller for the legs to fit my legs more snuggly.

寄り道

前回、「ショール１本で行きます」とか宣言したのに、↓の靴下が先に仕上がってしまいました（苦笑）

これはLeyburn socksという靴下で、こちらのMintyFreshさんのサイトか、Ravelryから無料です。

こんな風に、編まずに前に渡した糸が格子模様を作るパターンで、なかなかおもしろかったです。単色の糸を使うと、格子模様がもっとくっきりでますが、上のようなマルチカラーの物でも、前に渡した糸がうまい具合に色を分割してくれて、いい感じになると思います。実は、この糸、色の組み合わせが激しすぎて、どのパターンを使おうか迷っていたのですが、このパターンにしてみて良かったと思います。

ただ、残念なのは、私はveganなので今回もplant fiberを使ったわけですが（ちなみに、Maizyというコーンファイバーとナイロンの糸）、糸を前に渡すときにどうも糸割れしてしまうのです。植物系の糸は全般的によりが甘い気がしますが、普通に編む時は適当にねじれてくれるので、糸割れが気になることもそうはないんだけど、こんな風に、編まずに糸を前に渡すと、糸が割れたままになってしまうんですね。

まあ、そんなこと、大して気にしてるわけではないのですが：）

ちなみに、ヒールの部分は変えてみました。パターンはshort-row heelを使うことになっているのですが、個人的にヒールフラップの方が靴下っぽくて好きなので、ヒールはこんな風に出来上がりました。

あと、足首から上の部分はワンサイズ小さい針を使いました。ヒールが終わって足首の部分にあがるときに目数が増えるので、そのままではちょっとゆるくなりそうだったからです。

この靴下、実は、Ravelryのvegan socks groupのKAL用に２月の初めくらいから３月初旬の締め切りを目指して、編んでいたのですが、片方編み終わったところの、２月後半くらいから予想以上に忙しくなってしまって、３月の締め切りには間に合わない、とあきらめ、ほったらかしになっていたのです。

その間、フォーラム、ブログetc.を読んでる時間もなかなか取れなかったのですが、数週間前くらいからようやく落ち着いてきて、このKALのフォーラムを読んでみたら、締め切りが５月まで延長されていたことが判明！

ということで、例のショールの合間に、あわてて靴下を完成させたわけです。

ショールの方も順調です。あと数段！

spaceman and dog

it’s been raining a lot for the last few days. this is rather unusual here. we normally have clear sunny days, and last year we even suffered from drought. however, it is not the case for this year. these rainy days remind me of the rainy season where i used to live, which i don’t really like. it’s good that we don’t have to worry about the water supply, though.

anyways, this guy seems to have decided that he stays under a tree to avoid the rain:

this is a spaceman from ami-groovy world. and i made him on my husband’s request. i love when my husband wants me to knit something for him (or for his family). it makes me happy that my FOs can make him happy. especially this time, we went to a craft shop together and had him choose yarns and the beads for the eyes – yarn shopping with my husband! i enjoyed this rare chance so much.

unfortunately, though, the spaceman ended up being smaller than expected (about 20cm). i used 4-ply yarns and a 2.5mm hook. maybe i should’ve used a litter bigger hook. Or even 8-ply. But other than that, it was great and my husband liked it a lot.

also, i accidentally bought a tube that was a little bit too small for the eye beads we’ve chosen. my husband somehow managed to put them in the tube, and this made the edges bumpy.  i kind of like this way better, although they are smooth in the original pattern.

the second amigurumi to show today is this dachshund:

this is from daisukina amigurumi. i used 4-ply yarns and a 2.5mm hook at first. but it was getting bigger than i would have liked. i wanted to have a tiny dog that could be placed on an office desk (as this was a gift for a work-related person). so, i switched to a 1.75mm hook, and made him small enough.

posting these cute guys made me feel like making more amigurumis:)

久しぶりに大物（？）を編んでみました☆

apres surf hoodieと申します。

このパターン、もう一目惚れでした！もともと、Interweave Knitsというアメリカの雑誌の2008年夏号に載っていたものなんだけど、ネットのプレビューで見て以来、編みたくて編みたくて。もともとフード付きの洋服大好きな上、カジュアルだけどレースでおしゃれ度アップみたいのがつぼです。

ということで、雑誌の発売を待っていたのですが、同じ英語圏とはいえ、アメリカとオーストラリアはやはり外国。アメリカでの発売から長ーいこと待って、ようやく購入。それから糸をそろえて編み始めたのが９月（とRavelryに記録されているので、そうなんでしょう）。

途中まで編み始めるものの、クリスマス向けの編み物に忙しくなり、中断。もの自体は１月に完成したのだけど、引っ越し騒ぎに巻き込まれ、このたび、ようやくお披露目できるまでに至りました！

完成品を着ての↑の写真、実は真夏なのです。さすがに暑かった：）夜はだいぶ涼しくなってきたものの、まだまだ夏模様のオーストラリアなので、着る機会がほとんどないのが残念です。が、１ヶ月ほど前、１週間ほど日本へ帰ることがあったので、その時に着てみたところ、家族や親戚から大好評。実は、肩のところが微妙に失敗しているんですけどね^^;そんな暴露話にも、いや、でも、すごい、おしゃれ、な褒め言葉に、すっかり気を良くしてしまった私でした（単純）。

このパターン、元々は、雑誌掲載のパターンですが、今はこちらのサイトからパターンだけ購入できます。

増し目減らし目をしながらレースパターンを保つのに、ちょっと計算が必要で、戸惑いましたが（計算苦手なもので（苦笑））、編むのもとっても楽しかったです☆

ということで、次に取りかかっている大物はこちらのショール。

ほんとは編み始めたいトップがあるのだけど、とりあえずのところ、これ１本でいってみたいと思います！

a few projects

apres surf hoodie!!

this pattern was my love at first sight. i kept my eye on it since i saw this on the preview page of interweave knits. but living in Aus, i had to wait for the magazine to show up a while, then i got busy knitting christmas gifts, moving to a new house etc. though i finished this back in January, i couldn’t show this until now. but here it goes….

i had a bit of difficulty in keeping the lace pattern while increasing and decreasing for shaping (i hate math….) but it was really a fun knit. i didn’t do very well on the shoulder seaming, but still it’s definitely wearable, and i love it.

in fact, when i finished this, it was summer here, so i didn’t have a chance of wearing it. but then a few weeks ago, i had to go back to japan for a while. it was winter there, so i brought this sweater with me. it was a huge hit among my family! i heard my family’s and relatives’ oohs and aahs, and honestely felt good:)

now that chilly seasons are coming up here pretty soon, i get to wear this again.

i just looove heart motifs. because it is just so fun to knit, i’ve been basically working only on this project. the start of this project was hard though. you’ll start this from the edge, which means 1155 rows of 5 sts to make 578 ridges!! thankfully, it decreases quickly to become a manageable size.

so, working only on this leaves another WIP on hold, which is

leyburn socks.  i fnished one scok before the shawl became too fun to put down. maybe i just should finish up the second sock….

brimmed hat第２弾

みなさま、長らくご無沙汰してしまいました！新しいエントリーがない間も、いろんな方に訪れていただいていたみたいで、嬉しい限りです。ご無沙汰のわけは日頃の出来事を綴っているブログに書いてますが、簡単にいうと、引っ越したのですが、新しい家に「電話のサービスがある」と契約書にあるにもかかわらず、電話線がなくて、新しく電話線を引いてもらうのも不動産屋が面倒がってやってくれず、ネットどころか電話もない生活をさせられていたのでした。悲しい….。

と、まあなんだかいろいろありまして、新しい仕事を始めたりして忙しくなってきたりもしてるのですが、そんな中でもちょくちょく編み物は続けていて、とりあえずこちらの帽子を完成させました。

以前作ったbrimmed hatの第２弾です。普段はあまり同じパターンを使うことはないんだけど、このパターンはずっと違う糸で編みたい編みたいと思っていて、ちょうどいい太さのこの糸を見つけたときはかなり興奮気味でした（苦笑）しかも、在庫処分中だったようで半額とかだったかな。

それにしても同じパターンでも、糸を変えるとだいぶ印象が変わりますね。以前は、ちょっと実験で、もこもこした糸を使っていたので、↓な感じに出来上がっています。

これはこれで気に入ってるのですが、やっぱりもこもこ感のせいで、上の青いのに比べるとパターンがうまく出てませんね。

パターンはこちらのサイトから無料です。こちらのサイトでは子供用に小さめに作る方法も書かれているんだけど、けっこうかわいいので、甥っ子に作ってしまおうかしら、なんて企み中です。

purple bear

loooong time no see! it’s not that I was too busy to blog or I haven’t knitted for a while, but it’s just that we didn’t have Internet at home>_<. we’ve moved to this place in January and we realized that we didn’t have a telephone cable. it looks like that when one of the previous tenants renovated this place, the telephone cable was physically cut off (accidentally or intentionally – who knows?) and that little outlet box thing for a telephone cable was removed. as always, the real estate people were so slow fixing this problem, and it took us more than a month to install a new telephone cable and to get us back online! it’s ridiculous….

anyways, enough complaining….

the FO I’d like to share in this post is this little purple bear hiding behind plants:

I made her for my friend’s birthday. she adores soft toys and dolls. it turned out that she loves purple as well. I’m so glad that this little purple bear went to a nice lovely home:)

the pattern was from a Japanese amigurumi book called daisukina amigurumi, something like “my favorite amigurumi”. the original has a few more sewen decorations on her. unabling sewing myself, I opted for simpler clothing with a little knitted ribon and knitted pocket. pretty fun to knit and it was a real quick knit.

I hope you all had a lovely Christmas! My last christmas project was this cactus man again from amigurumi de yururi.

this is to my grandpa who has to stay in his bed all day because he is now too weak to walk. I wanted something fun and cheering in his bedside. For Christmas, I added some more fun to the cactus:

Rd 1: ch 6 into a ring with a Magic Ring method

Rd 2: 2 sc in 1 ch across (12 sc)

Rd 3: 12 sc

Rd 4: (1 sc, 2 sc in 1 ch) across (18 sc)

Rd 5: 18 sc

Rd 6: 2 sc in 1 ch across (36 sc) (start of the brim)

Rd 7: 36 sc, cut yarn and weave ends (for the Christmas one, I added another round in a white fluffy yarn)

A Fawn in the Ami-Groovy World

this is a fawn from Ami Groovy World: Miyuki Kawai’s amigurumi book. This books is a super cute collection of Miyuki Kawai’s work, who, according to the book, unfortunately passed away in 2005. She still looks very young in her picture in the book, though. You can see how unfortunate it was by looking at her work in this book. Not only are they cute, but also the book has unique amigurumis such as robots, spacemen, snake scarves, etc.

First off, I’ve tried this fawn, which was also featured in the front page. I made this for my mother-in-law for her Christmas present. I put a red ribbon to make the fawn a bit more christmassy. Here’s the close-up.

the fawn can stand up because wires are inside the body and the legs. Throughout this book, Miyuki Kawai uses a lot of wires, beads and tubes for her creative designs. It’s very eye-opening and fun to make. I’ll probably make a few more projects from this book. Stay tuned!

The book, however, contains only minimal instructions for the projects, and I figure that it is not for the beginners. I would recommend this book for those who already know the basics of amigurumi (though, it is not the most difficult thing, I suppose).
