It’s getting colder and colder, and I’ll be having a “real winter” for the first time in many years very soon. I’d been living in a place with only a mild winter for past several years (sometimes you can even see some people wearing short sleeves and flip flops in the daytime of normal winter! – though it does look a bit too cold for me), so I need to get ready to survive winter. for a start, I made these herringbone mittens. These are really pretty. Once you ’see’ the pattern, it was easy to establish the pattern.

I’ve never made mittens before, so I don’t know if the way the tip of the mittens is decreased is standard, but I wasn’t crazy about it. Also, if I make another pair, I’d make the cuffs tighter and longer. I saw other people made the cuffs using the two colors of the body, which look real cute. I wish I had that idea before I made mine;) Other than that, I love my new mittens! The stranded yarns at the back of the mittens make these even warmer, too.

=============================================================================

I made this a while ago for my nephew Y, though I didn’t have a chance to properly introduce it here. This is Necco Wafer Hoodie from Twist Collective Spring 2009. As is well known for people who have looked for a cute pattern for boys, it is really hard to find cute boyish patterns, though there are tons of cute patterns for girls. This, however, is cute and looks great on my nephew.

I didn’t realize that a 4 year old size sweater is pretty big;) (my nephew is actually 2.5 years old, but there was no sizing for 3 years old.) I got a bit bored with the stockinette in the body. It was nevertheless fun to knit and to think about the color combination. I’m sure it’ll knit up really quickly if one chooses a smaller size.

===========================================================

I’ve recently moved to the U.S. from Australia and one of the nice things about moving to the U.S. is that you can get the current issue of American knitting magazines like Interweave Knits and Vogue knitting! In Aus, you have to wait ages for those magazines to arrive to Aus. Besides, because the seasons are reversed, I didn’t feel like knitting anything from the most recent magazine arrived from U.S. So, it was not usual for me to knit something from the current issue.

For the first time, however, I was able to knit (and complete! yay!) this eyelet cap from the current issue of Vogue knitting.

I love the slouchiness of this hat very much. the folded brim makes a really nice and warm hat as well. the temperature around this region has dropped suddenly, so it will be really useful for the coming chilly season.

I made this hat slightly bigger than the original by making the decrease round as follows:

k2tog, k8 on the dec row (decrease only 18sts to 152sts)

I may not have needed this modification, as the brim is stretchy. However, I like how the bigger version hugs my head, so am glad that I made this modification.

For this hat, I used a yarn made of banana fiber and cotton. I’d been curious about banana fiber and been wanting to try one. Unfortunately, however, this one is a little rough on the skin and I don’t think it will make nice garments that will be worn directly on the skin. I really wanted to like this yarn, though….

======================================================================

[I've been writing two knitting blogs in two different languages for a while but I've decided to combine the two, writing this blog bilingually.]

anyways, in Japan, we have a superhero made of bread called “Anpanman”. “Anpan” is a sweet bread with sweet red bean paste or adzuki paste in it. many kids love this character and my nephew is no exception. so, I improvised a pattern following some pictures of Anpanman I downloaded from various websites. here he is!

as soon as my nephew saw him, he yelled “Ah, Anpanman!!”. so glad to hear that:)

it turns out that he likes Anpanman’s enemy “Baikinman” (the virus man) better. this guy seems a bit tricky to make, but maybe someday….

this is a baby doll and matching bottom from knitting lingerie style by Joan McGowan-Michael.

i love pretty lingerie. finding one in a shop is surely fun, but knitting a pair of lovely lingerie was also super fun! this is knitted in 100% bamboo yarn, and its texture is quite nice – very very very comfortable to wear (though, it’s a bit heavy….). i’d probably put a little ribbon or a rose at the front of the bottom if i feel like it sometime.

the book contains not only lingerie but also lingerie inspired clothing – all of them are quite lovely. besides, the photos are pretty lovely and make me want to look through the book over and over again. i chose this baby doll as a start, since it looks fairly easy, but i will certainly knit a few more patterns from the book in the hopefully near future.

I finally finished these socks:

this is falling in love. according to Ravelry, I seem to have started in July last year (!).

I have no idea what took me so long. the pattern is really pretty. as I love heart motifs, I really wanted to wear them, let alone to knit them. but somehow, these were the ones always left behind of other knits that had “higher priorities” (whatever they were). Poor sock….

here’s a full picture of them:

it is really pretty. I added the 2×2 ribbing cuff.

and the side:

I really like that the pattern has different choices for the heels. I chose the heel flap option (because I like heel flaps!), but there’s a short row heel option too. now I learned how to do heel flap for toe-up socks. cool.

As soon as the autumn atmosphere hit the shop displays, I felt like wearing a traditional style cabled vest. I don’t normally wear a vest, so I decided to make one myself. Searching Ravelry for vest patterns, I found a few cute vest patterns. But this time, I had fairly specific criteria for my vest – the cable has to be simple but not too simple:), the overall construction has to be traditional looking, but it cannot look like a school girl’s vest, etc. The closest pattern to my image that I could find was this Ticuna vest from Berroco Free pattern.

Here’s my FO:

(the actual colour is more grassy green than the yellow-ish green pictured)

I love this! This is what I had in my mind when I felt like wearing a vest. To be honest, I wanted to go for a V-neck, but after all, this is good. The simple but not too simple cables were really fun to knit. I was worried about the shaping, as there’s only one decrease at the back for the waist and there’s none at the front for the XS-size. But it fits me well.

Here’s the back:

To make it suit my taste better, I made the vest longer, and made the neck area wider. Here’s how I modified the pattern:

Length at the back: after the 3×3 rib, I added 2 1/2″ stockinette rows before the shaping. This means the total length before shaping armholes becomes 15″.

Length at the front: since there’s no shaping for the XS size, simply knit the front 15″ until the armhole shaping.

Neck: started neck shaping right after the armhole shaping (i.e. no work even rows). after the first 4 sts bind off for the neck, worked 0.5″, then bound off 3sts, worked 0.25″, then bound off 2sts. Followed the pattern from here.

I wish I made the armholes bigger though. The edging makes the armholes smaller. They are wearable, but considering that the vest will be worn over something, it would’ve been better if the armholes were a little bit bigger.

Now the matching scarf is on its way!

odessa is finished!

I love this hat very much! I have wanted to try beaded knitting for a while. Since I do beading sometimes, combining the two of my favourite crafts has appealed to me so much. but at the same time, I thought it would be difficult and complicated, and I didn’t try it for a long time.

it turns out that, although sliding beads while knitting is a bit painstaking, beaded knitting is real fun! I will definitely incorporate beads into my knitting more in the future, whether or not the pattern involves beads.

below is an illustration of how I did BK1 – knit a bead into a stitch:

step 1: string all the beads that will be used for the pattern (the odessa pattern calls for about 110-150 beads) before start knitting

step 2: knit to the stitch where you’d like to add a bead

step 3: put the yarn in front and slide a bead close to the stitch

step 4: slip the next stitch onto your right needle

step 5: take the yarn to the back (keep your tension)

step 6: knit (or however the pattern says) to the next position where you’d like to add a bead

this may be not the best way to add beads. in fact, this is different from the instruction in the odessa pattern. but I thought the bead sits well in this method.

happy beaded knitting!
